Ubuntu volunteers and families at a community activity

About us

Over 15 years supporting children and families in Barcelona's Zona Nord.

Our philosophy

“I am because you are”

Ubuntu is an African expression meaning “I am what I am because of who we all are”. Everyone matters, we are part of the tribe, and we accept each other as we are, living together with respect and critical thinking. Sharing and bonding foster individual and collective transformation.

In 2008 we started out as a Saturday-afternoon leisure space in Zona Nord, Ciutat Meridiana: Cau de la Ubuntu. In 2012, seeing the neighbourhood's needs up close (many families in vulnerable situations), we builtAssociació Educació i Lleure Ubuntu to carry out different projects with this philosophy.

Our ethos

Mission, vision and values

Mission

Education as our guiding principle: supporting everyday learning and life processes. Through education and leisure we promote the all-round development of Ubuntu community members and Zona Nord families in Barcelona, creating new opportunities.

Vision

To be recognised as a responsible organisation committed to social justice and human development, prioritising the defence of children and young people's rights. A dynamic, participatory association with local action and adaptive capacity.

Values

Unity · Diversity · Commitment · Quality · Trust · Transparency · Volunteering · Justice · Participation. Nine values guiding every project and every relationship in the community.

Transparency

The nine values, one by one

Unity
We believe in internal teamwork and external collaboration with other organisations and institutions, to build synergies and improve every aspect of our work.
Diversity
We foster a culture where everyone is treated fairly and respectfully, with equal access to opportunities and resources.
Commitment
We are fully committed to our mission and vision, grounded in integrity as the essential principle of our actions to help transform society.
Quality
We set quality criteria by analysing each educational and leisure project, with clearly measurable indicators and goals.
Trust
We offer the community safety, warmth and familiarity they can lean on in our team.
Transparency
We base our work on honesty, mutual responsibility and maximum access to information: social and financial accountability to members, collaborators, donors and society.
Volunteering
We provide what people need to get involved and contribute personally, professionally and socially to our projects' educational richness.
Justice
We believe in individual freedom, interdependence and equality between people and institutions, so everyone gets their due.
Participation
We promote democratic, participatory principles as the means for social transformation.
